Story Writing For Comics

 A SIMPLE START

So if you did not see yesterdays post, that is ok. I'll recap. This week I am working on a project to start and finish a mini comic. (Maybe a few pages, maybe a few panels. It really just depends on where the process takes me.) As I work on this project, I am posting how I am going about each step so hopefully it can help some of you out there as well.

TODAY WAS OUTLINE DAY

When I started developing the story I'm working on I just kept it really loose and simple. Today is about starting to form an idea to develop tomorrow with a rough script.

So how did I go about outlining ideas?

quite simply I went thru and made an idea web.

This is what it looked like.

SETTING:

To start I solidified what setting I wanted. ( In my case a fantasy setting ) Go as deep with this as you want. Ask yourself questions such as:

1. why this setting
2. does it appeal to you
3. what do you want to write about ( or draw if your doing the art for your book as well)

Keep it simple at this stage. ( Keep everything simple at this stage.)

CHARACTERS:

Next your gonna need some dudes to run around and do stuff to keep it going. Again your going to be asking yourself what kind of characters do you want to write and draw.

I tried to keep in mind for tomorrow when I'm scripting that I can always make another idea web if I need more characters or if the story gets more complicated.

CONFLICT:

What are your characters doing? How are they reacting with each other? Why are they doing it.

You don't need to go super deep at this point. ( Again keeping it simple ) Try to think about what you want to make in a broad since. Do you want to draw a lot of action? A love story? Do you really just want them to walk around in wonderous landscapes?

Design your conflict around a general idea. I was kind of going at this like a ball of clay. At the moment I'm giving very brief ideas about what could happen and I will build up on it as I continue tomorrow.

OUTCOME:

This is probably the least important part at this point. I thought it would be helpful to give me an idea of where to direct the story as I go but if it changes because of how my scripting goes.....GREAT.

So I hope this helps a little to figure out some rough ideas and get you started! Give it a shot, and let me know how it works out for you.

KEEP GOING
YOU CAN DO IT!
YOUR  A CHAMPION!

    until tomorrow,
-CHAP
